A Debate

Little boy turned 3 a few months ago, and Little Girl is turning 5 in about a month.  The other day I was getting dressed in our room as hubby and the kids hung out on our bed.
Hubby told me I should not be getting dresses (aka – naked) in front of Little Girl anymore, since she is almost 5.

What?  I looked at him like he had 3 heads!  Are you kidding me?  She is a girl; I am a girl – why can she not see me naked?
I get that very soon I am going to have to close the door on Little Boy seeing me naked (I am thinking before his 4th birthday for sure), but do I have to do the same for Little Girl?

I told Hubby, that I grew up seeing my mother naked well into my teenage years, and if we take the kids swimming, there are plenty of women in the change room where you see more than their ankles.
So I told him I would put this out on the blog and see what everyone one else has to say.

Is there an age that I should no longer let me daughter see me naked?

  1. I don't know if there is an "age". I always gauged it by how I felt and how they were acting. For example: I showered with my 5 year old until just a couple of months ago. Then I started to feel awkward so I stopped. She never seemed to have any issue with it ever. I stopped much sooner with the boys because they seemed to stare too long at my boobs for my liking. I think it's a judgement call. If you're cool and she has no reaction then it's fine. In my humble opinion.

  2. I don't think so...I grew up with 2 sisters and my mom and it was never unacceptable to see each other if changing.

Heck my little one (4 and a boy) still sees me sometimes.

  3. I think your reasoning is right. We try to get my husband to be covered up around the girls, and I will do the same thing around our son, but if they have the same parts as you, I don't see a problem.

  4. I think it's totally fine at any age if you are the same sex. My boys are 3, 4, and 6 and they still see me naked. I'll stop when it starts to feel uncomfortable for them....plus I don't really have any boobs, so I probably look more like a boy anyway ;)

  5. My daughter is roughly the same age, and I have to say I feel strange about it, but she also tends to leave when I'm in the shower or getting dressed, and she prefers to get dressed alone as well.... she's the only child out of the nearly 5 year olds I know that wants that level of privacy. I can only recall seeing my Mom in her bra and underwear into my teen years... and she was comfortable around the house like that even with my brothers. Short answer, I'm following my kids leads. When they are uncomfortable, then I switch what we are doing.

  6. I think it is healthy for her to grow up seeing her mom and how a real woman looks like.
